Theater Artemis and Design Museum Den Bosch realised the art project I Like School and School Likes Me in the utmost secrecy. Between April 2017 and January 2019, ten different artists stayed at nine secondary schools for three days and three nights each.
I like school and school likes me is a study of the interaction between art and education: is it a confrontation or a dialogue? Filmmaker Melanie Pardoel made a documentary of each performance. These documentaries and the impact of the project form the special presentation I like school and school likes me, which can be seen in the museum until 12 May.
From April 2017 to January 2019, I like school and school likes me took place in the utmost secrecy at secondary schools in Eindhoven, Wolvega, Amsterdam, Culemborg, Ostend (B), Zuid-Scharwoude and Best.
Joseph Beuys’ 1974 performance I like America and America likes me is, for Liesbet Swings – education coordinator at Theater Artemis and initiator of the project – a striking metaphor for the exciting relationship between art and education. Drawing on their respective backgrounds, Theater Artemis and Design Museum Den Bosch sought out ten related (performance) artists or designers who wanted to be inspired to freely reinterpret the work, using a secondary school as the location.
I like school and school likes me is a contemporary re-enactment of Beuys’ performance, in which an artist stays at a secondary school for three days non-stop. Based on his artistic individuality and daily concerns, he tries to build a relationship with the school environment and the pupils and get them moving. How do they respond to this?
