Design Museum Den Bosch proudly presents the work of five talented designers from the Brabant design world as part of the 2019 Design Prize. The Design Prize is awarded every two years by the North Brabant Cultural Fund, alternately to an established designer and an up-and-coming talent. This year’s winner is textile and product designer Simone Post. Her work, together with that of the four other nominees, will be on display from 1 June to 18 August 2019.
Design of the future
Design Museum Den Bosch aims to highlight and discuss the cultural significance of design, presenting 20th and 21st century design and linking the history, current events and future-oriented quality of design. The candidates for the Design Prize are all engaged in their own way with the way design and society influence each other, now and in the future. This makes Design Museum Den Bosch the perfect place to view the work of these up-and-coming talents.
Laureate Simone Post
Material experimentation, in-depth research and a love of colour, prints and craftsmanship are characteristic of Simone Post’s work. She strives for sustainable designs rooted in tradition. She launched her career with the Post-Vlisco rug, which breathes new life into rejected fabrics from textile manufacturer Vlisco. Simone Post also collaborates with wood and plastic factories to make products from their waste. ‘Recycling is nothing new, but the large-scale approach Simone Post takes and the technique she uses to do so are,’ according to the jury.
The other four candidates
In addition to Simone Post’s work, work by the other four candidates is also on display. The jury of the 2019 Design Prize wrote the following about them: As a food and concept designer, Chloé Rutzerveld knows how to set a movement in motion and stimulate creativity in a wide range of target groups, from children to foodies. Théophile Blandet focuses on new processes, skills and technologies; he is a rising star who is making an international breakthrough with his art design. As a bio-designer, Teresa van Dongen creates aesthetic and sustainably produced designs that make us think about nature and scarce energy resources. With her crossover between design and data visualisation, Irene Stracuzzi tells a story that needs to be told.
About the Design Prize
The Design Prize of the North Brabant Cultural Fund is awarded every two years, alternately to an established designer (in 2017 to Piet Hein Eek) and to an up-and-coming talent. King’s Commissioner Wim van de Donk will present the prize to Simone Post during Dutch Design Week, on 20 October at the Kazerne Eindhoven Design Centre. The Design Prize is accompanied by a cash prize of €10,000. This year’s jury consisted of Jan Post (chairman, board member and vice-chairman of the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund N-B), Wendy Plomp (founder, curator and director of Dutch Invertuals), Berry Eggen (professor of Industrial Design Theory at TU/e), Annemoon Geurts (designer, initiator and curator of Designcentrum Kazerne) and Timo de Rijk (director of Design Museum Den Bosch).
During the opening of the Design Prize 2019 exhibition, Jan Post, chair of the jury, gave a wonderful speech.
