Aesthetics of military maps: Riga

When this six-sheet map was printed in Leningrad, Riga was still a part of the Soviet Union. In contrast to maps of cities beyond the borders of the Soviet Union and its satellite states, this map boasts a higher degree of accuracy. It meticulously notes various details, including river flows, depths, and widths, as well as bridge dimensions and the various tree species in the forests. By contrast, the map does not differentiate between military installations and industries.

Генеральный Штаб (General Staff (of the Soviet Army)), Рига (Riga), (Leningrad) 1983. Coll. S/T W.2d.67, 270 x 240 cm.
