The sneaker is bought and worn daily by millions of people worldwide; in 2021 alone, more than 1.1 billion pairs of sneakers were sold. This makes it also directly an environment-damaging industry, because the production of one pair causes an average CO2 emission of 13.6 kilograms. This is mainly due to the complex composition of a sneaker and the materials used. The video below, which can also be seen in Sneakers Unboxed, explains why these CO2 emissions are so high. And what can be done about it.
