International maps of the world

In 1891, the ‘International Map of the World’ project was launched to provide ‘a politically neutral representation of geographical facts’. Only decades later an agreement was reached on the Greenwich prime meridian, while the metric system was used for scale. When this utopian project was finally completed in 1986, its usefulness was obsolete.
