Shrinking the world

This world map was designed by magazine illustrator Antonio Petrucelli in 1943 and published by US company Alcoa Aluminium. The North Pole is at the centre. Of interest to the company is the logistical advantage of the shorter route between Chicago and Tokyo, which this North Pole projection compares with the longer route on the classic Mercator projection. The cover shows the shrinking of the world.
