Virtuele expeditie — GOTH – Designing Darkness(for English see below)
Op vrijdag 11 februari kun je weer op virtuele expeditie, nu in de tentoonstelling GOTH – Designing Darkness. Je ziet de hoogtepunten uit de tentoonstelling: de foto’s uit de legendarische club The Batcave, de keramiek van Carolein Smit, de 19e-eeuwse griffioen van Emmanuel Frémiet en de dystopische maquette van Pieter Leon Vermeersch. Assistent-conservator Tomas van den Heuvel zal de tentoonstelling en deze werken toelichten. Daarnaast kan je luisteren naar interessante gesprekken over de thema’s van de tentoonstelling.
Te gast zijn onder andere:
- Catherine Spooner, een van de belangrijkste gothic-kenners ter wereld. Ze is werkzaam aan de Lancaster University en auteur van de boeken ‘Contemporary Gothic’ en ‘Post-Millenial Gothic: Comedy,Romance and the Rise of Happy Gothic’.
- Lisa der Weduwe, namens het Museum of Youth Culture London, waar een enorme collectie fotomateriaal en kennis over van Britse goths verzameld is.
- Dani Ashes, ook bekend als The Count, host van de grootste goth-podcast Cemetery Confessions en oprichter van The Belfry Network, een mediabedrijf dat alle verschillende facetten van goth bij elkaar brengt.
- De avond wordt gepresenteerd door Ama van Dantzig, medeoprichter van Dr Monk.
Tijdens de avond gaan we in op verschillende vragen. Hoe komt het dat de goth subcultuur steeds weer opduikt of misschien zelfs nooit is weg geweest? Onder welke omstandigheden ontstond deze subcultuur in de muziekscene van de jaren 80? Wat zijn de historische wortels in de gothische fascinatie in de 18e een 19e eeuw en hoe beïnvloedden deze de goth subcultuur? Goth wordt gezien als een veilige haven voor individuele expressie en creativiteit maar gaat ook over het bij een gemeenschap horen en je daarbinnen vrij voelen. Toch zijn er ook regels codes en misschien zelfs hierarchie. En tot slot: kunnen we voorspellen wat de toekomst van goth is, hoe verhoudt goth zich tot de grote vragen van onze tijd?

With some astonishing highlights from the exhibition and interesting talks with goth-lovers and scientists. Where exhibition galleries are customarily beacons of light and brightness, here you will find dark walls, placed at unexpected angles, which combined with sparse lighting evoke a mysterious, dark atmosphere in perfect keeping with the content of GOTH – Designing Darkness. Goth is the world’s biggest subculture. A lifestyle steeped in an undefined yearning for the dark side of life. The exhibition GOTH – Designing Darkness looks for the wellspring of the Goth scene to present two centuries of a cultural history packed with dramatic imaginings, ominous design and melancholic art. Such darkness as never seen before in a museum…
Let us introduce the special guests of tonight:
- Catherine Spooner one of the most important gothic-experts in the world. She is a Professor of Literature and Culture at Lancaster University, United Kingdom, where she specialises in Gothic in literature, film, fashion and popular culture. Her seven books include Fashioning Gothic Bodies, Contemporary Gothic and Post-millennial Gothic: Comedy, Romance and the Rise of Happy Gothic, which was awarded the 2019 Allan Lloyd Smith Memorial Prize by the International Gothic Association. She is currently writing a book on the Gothic cultural history of the white dress.
- Nick Groom is a Professor at the University of Macau. He is known in the media as the ‘Prof of Goth’ and has edited several major texts of Gothic literature such as The Monk and Frankenstein, as well as writing the bestselling book The Gothic: A Very Short Introduction (all Oxford University Press). Recently, he has also published on the Gothic from the history of ruins to the singer-songwriter Nick Cave. His last book is The Vampire: A New History (Yale University Press, 2018), and he is currently completing a new anthology of C19th vampire tales, again for Oxford University Press. Nick Groom joined the University of Macau in 2020 as Professor of Literature in English, where with Prof. William Hughes he founded UMGothic and with whom he co-edited the first response from the Humanities to Covid-19, titled CoronaGothic: Cultures of the Pandemic (Critical Quarterly, 2021).
- Dani Ashes aka The Count host of the biggest goth-podcast Cemetery Confessions and founder of The Belfry Network. Aside from having a passion for the goth community, they spend much of their time keeping up with sociology, cognitive science, neurobiology and philosophy. They call themself a nerd, a gamer (video and tabletop), a horror movie fan, a beer connoisseur, an atheistic pagan, and lover of learning.
- Lisa der Weduwe who will represent the Museum of Youth Culture London, an archive with a huge collection of photographs on the British goth culture. Lisa is an expert on youth cultures.
- Mel Butler, photographer, musician, DJ and professional goth. Mel got into the goth subculture in 1985, aged 13. She grew up – and still lives – in the post-industrial North East of the UK.
- Tomas van den Heuvel, historian and co-curator of the exhibition GOTH – Designing Darkness.
The host of tonight will be Ama van Dantzig, a creative mastermind, building bridges between seemingly opposite worlds.
