Thinking Beyond Papanek: Decolonizing Design Education

Webinar — Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design

(for English see below)

Zoom Webinar: Decolonizing Design Education

Thinking Beyond Papanek: Decolonizing Design Education

Throughout his career, the visionary designer, critic and activist Victor Papanek (1923-1998) formulated and promoted a radical vision of design in which social justice and sustainability are core values rather than mere additional benefits. Design as a practice has to bear meaning for the greater good, and designers should align their practices with those they aim to design for. The themes and concepts brought about by Papanek are now more relevant than ever. In fact, the exhibition Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design demonstrates how his ideas have newly gained prominence and continue to resonate with a younger generation of designers, artists and thinkers.

In this two-part series, Master’s students enrolled in the Critical Inquiry Lab at the Design Academy Eindhoven will reflect on Papanek’s work and his overall impact on the discourse around design

Zoom Webinar: Decolonizing Design Education

Thursday 18 March, 18.00 – 20.00

As a design practitioner and educator, Victor Papanek’s perception has contributed to formulating a large part of the Western design discourse in its industry and education. However, his approach to deploying ‘other’ cultures into his narrative, left space to reflect on the decolonial visions in design education and academia. In the event  Decolonizing Design Education, we want to explore how decolonial strategies are challenged and achieved in (non-)Western educational institutions nowadays. We aim to talk about this topic from the language of instruction to the direction of education with design educators and practitioners.

In a panel discussion the Berlin-based Brazilian artist Luiza Prado de O. Martins, and other guests will shed some light on these and other questions. The panel discussion will be moderated by Ama van Dantzig, social entrepreneur and co-founder of Dr. Monk. The language of communication for this event is English.
